two households both alike...

i can't believe it is already time for a third stab (no pun intended) at romeo and juliet. my heart belonged to olivia hussey and leonard whiting until 97, and then i made room for my beloved claire danes and leonardo dicaprio. now carlo carlei has casted true gritness hailee steinfeld as juliet. while i truly believe that olivia hussey is one of the dreamiest gals to have ever graced the silver screen, i also believe hailee has some serious O.H potential. same baby face and moon goddess 70s center-parted hair and serious eyebrows. i dig it.

i am, however, hard-pressed to believe there is a romeo out there with the same hubba hubba quality as leonard whiting and leonardo dicaprio. seriously, who could hold a torch???

i just saw this commercial for the first time yesterday. i think it's a pretty adorable ad for cotton and perfect for spring. i wish she & him would go on tour again this summer. and i wish i had my beloved pink bruiser bicycle. i really miss her.

breathlessly gorgeous trailer. i might have to get HBO so i can see jon raymond and todd haynes's adaptation of the 1945 classic mildred pierce. there are 66 costume changes for kate winslet- sixty-six?!!! i will be waiting with baited breath, and my snap-happy camera clicking away through all the scenes. gorgeous.

the sartorialist...

i love this video. mainly because it makes me long for my old stomping ground~the west village. amy merrick brought this video to my attention and i am very grateful for that! and, who doesn't love to see the sartorialist in action?! i used to see him all the time making the rounds in the west village with his giant camera and soccer player calves. the man has some seriously muscular calves!

p.s his former assistant is one of the most adorable gals in town! seriously, i have a whole girl crush post coming soon about her!

this looks so dazzling i can't even stand it! i thoroughly enjoyed the book and am very much looking forward to the film version. the trailer is majorly giving me a "big fish" kind of vibe, and i dig it.

can't wait to go to nyc. i may or may not go to the anthropologie in the flatiron district and ask them for a funky cropped cardigan and a big ole funky belt. the best part is SNL made these rednecks from DECATUR, GA. that's like taking the cast of jersey shore and saying they're from the west village. yes milena.

oh i love this so much. isn't it a charming timeline of the evolution of fashion + technology? it is fascinating at which the speed of digital media is democratizing, well, everything? as much as i celebrate life pre-technology, i must admit i'm pretty thankful for its presence. i would have loved to have attended this conference with suzy menkes to discuss the topic of how the digital age is affecting luxury and craftsmanship and the "sensory pleasures" of shopping in brick and mortar shops.

i especially love this romantic, vintage cinema music playing in the background with the layering of computer noises. and the juxtaposition of the hand-embroidery(old) with the style of film-making that is very modern at the moment. lagerfeld really does say it the best “make a better future by developing elements from the past.”

kodak 1922 film tests...

i don't get tired of this little film. it is a great pick-me-up when i need some eye candy. i keep trying to find more films like this online, but i keep coming up dry! do y'all know if more of these "film tests" exist anywhere else?

popeye...

what better way to kick off the month of costumes, than to watch a campy, classic kid's movie? i love popeye. it's charming, clever, and stands the test of time( in my humble opinion). in fact, i find it even more endearing as an adult.

my mom still frequently breaks out into olive oyl's "he's large" song in a warbly, screechy voice. always cracks me up.

i had forgotten how happy this movie makes me. the costumes, the colors, the songs...

the sleepy little seaside shanty town, sweet haven, hosts the dusty, the hard-knocked, and the misfits.

the characters' names are terrific! wimpy, olive oyl, caster oyl, cole oyl... swee'pea! so stinkin' cute.

honestly these costumes really rock the house. all the girls wear these grey-ed out hues, layers of tiered ruffles, stompin' boots, funny hats, and polka dots. the costume designer was givin' me serious comme des garcons looks. i love me some downtrodden ragamuffin chic-ha!

and plenty of bearded and mustachioed men sporting schlumpy, moth-eaten sweathers and fisherman caps.

i pitched the idea of a "popeye and olive oyl" halloween costume to my slumbering husband this morning...

his incredulous reply: "ummmm, isn't popeye a really short, buff, bald dude?" fair enough.
