The grass really is greener on the other side. The snow is such a nuisance, I am tired of darkness and my fingers are cold. But come spring, my hayfever will be making me wish I lived in the north pole... x

aww... I feel for you! I am a new york ex-pat and the winters are one of the main reasons I moved away - so dreary and cold especially after a snow. I'm in Texas now, but we still have some cold months. To cope, I'm totally bunkering down with netflix streaming & heated blankets. mulled wine helps too. and one thing I do miss about extreme cold weather? the awesome knitwear you get to wear ;)

I completely understand that feeling, to make it through winter I make a Spring inspiration board (i do it each season really), its a great big bulletin board hanging above my dresser covered in photos, magazine rippings, fabric and other bits and baubles, it inspires me stylistically for the next season.

oh i love these ideas! i'm trying to find good nyc/ greater ny area excursions or quirky little things to do. to pass the time.

i love the winter for the cold weather, i just really miss longer hours of daylight.

Oh, goodness -- I am on the opposite side of this completely! I love the long hours of grey and dark; I love the cold and wind and snow. In my ideal life, I would alternate hemispheres twice a year and never have to deal with summer ever again. I am seriously depressed right now because everyone else in the world seems to be having massive cold snaps and snowstorms, and here in Seattle it is approaching 50 degrees every day and it is stupidly not wintery at all.

miss b!

i totally understand, i am normally camp fall/winter! i hate the heat, hate to sweat, and i burn so easily. i like to wear layers and snuggle up and all those good things. but the short days bum me out :( especially in new york, when you live in a tiny apartment. and ride the subway.

But, each day we are gaining about two minutes of daylight! Plan for spring, look at gardening catalogs, "eat the rainbow" (lots of colorful foods) ... we will make it! :-)

I can kind of understand that, I suppose. When I lived in Geneva for a year, back in my wasted youth, it was totally soul-crushing from October through March -- being next to a big lake and in a valley between big mountains, it's pretty much a foggy mess every day for months. Dark when I got up in the morning, dark all day, dark when I got home in the evening. However, now I actually really like that sort of short-day greyness. Not that I hate sunshine (just heat) but there is a certain quality-of-light that comes with dark daylight hours that really grabs me.

I suggest cranking up the heat or lighting a fire (ummm...only if you actually have a fireplace) and drinking some summer drinks -- Pimm's cups, say, or something sangria-y. With a good summer-in-Italy sort of movie on in the background.

Bulbs, lots of bulbs! Hyacinths and Paperwhite Narcissi to fill the house with scent and the promise of brighter, lighter days to come.

Turning the heat way, way up & being criminally lazy on my days off. Hot cider. Mexican hot chocolate. Lots and lots of books: I'm almost done with the Calvino! Making any meal that involves turning on the oven. And napping. O, I sleep and nap so much in the winter. It's so cozy!

We just signed up for Netflix, though, and watching old episodes of Sherlock Holmes may keep us occupied for a loooong time. Hopefully long enough to forget all about the dreadful new movie they just made.
