table manners...

spoons

anyone else collect mis-matched silverware? i do! especially spoons. i like having pretty spoons in my life. comes in handy when i justify icecream as my fifth food group. i have old sweet tea spoons, berry spoons, caviar spoons, and table setting spoons. i feel like the bubba gumps of spoons.

silver markings 1

crown marking

my mother usually sneaks a few pieces of vintage flatware into care packages or my christmas stocking. my favorite are the pieces she thrifts that belonged to hotels. from the swanky, fancy pants variety to the humble likes of holiday inn.

silverware
i love the little markings and ornamental flourishes.

bridal silver

my silverware pattern

but nothing is more special than wedding silverware. mine is gortham lancaster. it was apparently very popular in the gilded era- ooh la la! and it is also the same pattern as my grandmother's and my big sister's. i like the beaded piping, and the girly roses.

it might be about time to practice super-adultish, wifely homemaking duties. like polishing silver, for instance, not exactly a chore i incorporate into my cleaning routine. or maybe it is time for me to pull out the ben and jerry's americone dream out of the freezer and watch the daily show with my husband. i will probably go with the latter.

My grandparents have an antiques shop and I always end up with old bits of plate and silver cutlery with poppies on. I hope one day that I will have enough to never have to buy a set and always be able to eat of miss match stuff. I love miss match!

i collect mismatched silverware too, and mismatched teacups and saucers as well!

(yours are much nicer, though)

I steal spoons! (shhh...don't tell anyone) Anytime I am at a cafe or restaurant and have a particularly memorable experience, or the spoon is especially nicely-shaped, I pocket it. I have perhaps 3 or 4-dozen spoons in my cutlery drawer, and 6 or fewer lonely forks. I eat everything that is possible to eat with a spoon...with a spoon (and from a bowl -- I only use plates for sandwiches). I wear a small antique silver salt spoon pinned to the lapel of my coat, and I have rings made from antique spoon handles, too. I am in love with spoons, and I loved your pictures of them.

Hi Ginnybranch Stelling. I collect silverware, too, and dinerware and shot glasses and, well, you name it. Have you ever tried polishing your silver with a sheet of aluminum foil, a glass baking dish, a teaspoon of salt and about a quarter cup of baking soda? Line the baking dish with the foil, put your silver on top, sprinkle the salt and baking soda on top, pour boiling water over everything, let it sit, then polish with a soft cloth. Works like a dream...that is, if you can stand the rotten egg/sulfur smell. Make sure you try it in a well-ventilated area and several hours before you have guests over!

Oh I love to collect sterling or solid silver small spoons. There is a shop here in San Francisco called Period George on Clement Street, they have the most wonderful collection and the owner always indulges my need to dig and doesn't care that I just buy one at a time.

Lovely collection that you posted...Thank you.

These are all so lovely. I'd love to start collecting silverware too for when I eventually get my own place. I love the idea of serving meals with all mismatched cutlery and plates.

Yes! Both my bro and I have sets of mismatched (well, all rat's tail style, but from different sets) antique silverware sets. he also managed to find us a canteen each to keep them in. I treasure my set - dents and nicks and all - so much more personality than something brand new.

I have mismatching chinawear, but I'd never thought of silverwear too.
Not sure if I'd be up for all the polishing though. Also do you find silver cutlery leaves an odd taste when you eat?
