hold me accountable...

calligraphy

calligraphy 2

so, i love lists (duh, i'm a girl) and i came up with a list of goals/hopes/ wishes for 2010. please help me stick to them.

go! lazy fat shrewd vixen

  1. floss everyday. boring, boring, boring! but i DO NOT do it and i NEED to DO IT.
  2. learn how to make and bake bread. nothin' fancy, just a simple, belly warming recipe.
  3. take an etiquette class(it's been way too long, and i am very out of practice). and i don't hope to be snooty patootie either. i just do not want to make mistakes at fancy dinners. as i have in the past.
  4. start embroidering my wedding quilt.
  5. read gone with the wind. my husband is reading it right now, and i am embarrassed to say i've never read it. i'm not so fond of the movie, and i want to love the book
  6. take a calligraphy class i registered tonight for my first one! i would love to be able to address wedding invitations. too bad i didn't learn in time for my own-shoot!
  7. learn how to make a mean ramos fizz. or a bramble.
  8. host more parties. i really love having all of my favorite people in a room together, eating, drinking. preferably wearing funny hats or some sort of flair. anything with a theme.
  9. treat my hands and feet better. i'm really hard on them. pumice stones, nail files, and cuticle cream. any recommendations?
  10. drink more water. i love water, but i drink more coffee than i should ever admit.
  11. go on more adventures. anywhere. local. exotic. mysterious. conventional. i do not care! i just want to leave my neighborhood more!
  12. visit j morgan puett's artist colony in pennsylvania. i was hoping to go this fall, but tours stopped in october. so, this spring...
  13. take a lace class or a woodworking class at john c campbell folk school. or maybe broom-making? if i don't go this summer, someone CALL ME OUT on it. or volunteer to go with me. i would love a camp companion.
  14. have a small gallery showing of my drawings. maybe. this one might be a stretch. maybe a group show. i don't know. i get last-minute panic attacks about this kind of stuff. someone would have to hold my hand through this.
  15. be more experimental with the cameras i use. i have several, but i always rely on my digital. i love my pentax k1000, fugi instax, lomography diana and holga. i am a very, plain jane hobbyist but i want to have a bit more variety.
  16. forgive more. i tend to hold onto grudges. hard. it's one of my many flaws.
  17. practice more yoga and maybe take another ballet class? or just DANCE MORE!
  18. be more mindful of my spending. i'm not terrible, but i could be better. i get suckered by bargains, and ebay/ flea markets are temptresses of cheap, lovely old things. things i can absolutely live without. i want to try a spending freeze. maybe after valentine's day...
  19. tidy up countertops every night. just a little bit. ideally, i would like to go to bed with nothing dirtying up surface spaces. piles of clothing, on the other hand, is practically unavoidable in new york!
  20. be more accountable. all-round. ownership. it's an important trait. one that i need to work on.

Lists are a must... and I like your 2010 list! I need to floss more too... doesn't everyone? Baking bread is totally on my list too! I've been wanting to do this for awhile now, but haven't gotten around to it. Love the idea of an etiquette class... I had to take some when I was younger, and I'm super into proper etiquette in certain areas and am constantly wondering what has happened to the world with their lack of? For your hands & feet- Mary Kay makes a wonderful Satin Hands set, check that one out. Good luck in your adventures and definitely put your drawings in a show!! Do take a class... we're doing square dancing classes right now, it's so much fun. Good luck to you & your honey in the new year!

My grandmother has hands as soft as a babys bottom and she says that the secret is vaseline every single time after you wash your hands.

As far as bread goes, check out this book:

Where did you sign up for the calligraphy course? I'm thinking of taking one at Society of Scribes - http://www.societyofscribes.org/

By the way, I adore your blog! I just started one of my own - velvetnectar.blogspot.com

another really easy way to make bread is the no knead bread recipe - i tried it recently and it works like a charm. if you don't have a dutch oven, just use a casserole dish with aluminum foil on top. good luck with your resolutions!

making bread is a great one. me and my love made a resolution to only make our own bread, and i have to recommend jim lahey's no knead bread book. saw him on martha stewart and i was obsessed. he even has a bakery in nyc, so please go & enjoy.

Here was my first try, I have to admit it turned out pretty fancy.

I really enjoyed reading this post! It is inspiring. I encourage you to go for every dream you wrote down! You can totally do it. I always set goals on my birthday, and one of this year's goal is to do more yoga. I go to yogatoday.com and take their classes. They are the best.

Go for it! Take a tiny step everyday!

Ginny, in Blogger, go to your Layout tab and click "Edit HTML." Under "Edit Template," scroll down until you see "#main-wrapper {"; the number after "width" should be slightly bigger than the width of your very biggest images, so, around 1030px. I think that should do it, but preview it before saving to make sure!!

Gosh, there's so much good stuff on your list... shamefully, I'm still composing mine. But I would love to start running, spinning, and yoga-ing again. I was kind of a gym rat before I met my man, and I want to be that strong again!

Like you, I need to start flossing and I have never read Gone with the Wind (though I have it in English and in German on my bookshelf). Also, I would totally go take a class at the Campbell school with you!

these are great! good luck sticking to them - hosting parties and having good manners and taking interesting classes sound like fabulous ways to make 2010 significant.

Re #3, if the table is properly set, just start at the outside of the silverware and work your way in for each course. Don't make the mistake I see SO many do and eat with the fork tines up in the left hand. If you want to use the fork in the left hand (perfectly proper) turn the tines down and use the knife in the right to maneuver the food.

Old (I mean 1920s & 30s) Emily Post books can be found at places like Strand and are both funny and charming (not stuffy at all) and I think would suit your aesthetic very well.

You are so charming yourself that other than how to use the place setting I cannot imagine your manners needing a tune-up.
